Work in Canada
Canada is a prime destination for many foreign nationals who are seeking employment opportunities. Working in Canada is also an excellent first step for those seeking to immigrate to the country permanently.
Canada has over 100 different work permit options for global talent and employers. Each year, Canada issues about half a million work permits to temporary foreign workers around the world.
Navigating Canada’s work permit options can be difficult but we seek to make it as easy for you as possible.
Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Canada.
There are two types of work permits:
1. Employer-specific work permit
An employer-specific work permit lets you work in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit, such as
- the name of the specific employer you can work for
- how long you can work
- the location where you can work (if applicable)
2. Open work permit
An open work permit lets you work for any employer in Canada, but they are issued only in specific circumstances.
Following are open work permits (no job offer or LMIA required)
- Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
- Spousal Sponsorship from Inside of Canada
- International Experience Canada (IEC) (working holiday visa)
- Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)
- Spouse Accompanying International Student or Worker
